Week 60 - Finding the Prepared

你好!

Well, this has truly been an amazing week. There were not a ton of big events that happened, but there were plenty of miracles and blessings shown through out the week as Elder Huang and I were out doing missionary work.

As to quickly answer some questions I have gotten recently, here are the answers.
- Have there been any changes with a having a new mission president?
No, there haven't been any changes. When we first got to meeting President Jergensen about two weeks ago, he said all the guidelines from President Day are still to be followed until further instructed. So, sounds like there will be some changes, but it will probably be around Christmas when those changes start coming out.
- How is English Class?
With location and timing, we actually do not attend the English class here. It is about a 25 minute bike ride to the chapel, and they already have 4 companionships that live closer to the chapel, so we have been invited to continue with doing missionary work in our own area, which does have its benefits because that means that Wednesday night we are still able to meet with our investigators.
- Do we have rooms and a washer at our apartment?
Yes we do. The apartment is designed to be a four man apartment, but there are only the two of us right now. Also for the washer, every apartment in the mission has a washer. The real question is a working drier. Most apartments have a drier, but most of them are broken, and being elders that don't want to spend money, they usually don't get repaired. As for our apartment though, we have a working drier, which is pretty nice.
- What do we do for food?
Elder Huang really likes to eat inside for Lunch, so we eat inside for lunch. As for dinner, we recently have been trying out a whole bunch of new places, to see what is good here. Whenever we ask people what there is good to eat here in 新竹 (Xinzhu), they always seem to look a little puzzled and then tell us they don't know of any really good places to eat. So, when we are biking, we will take note of any place that looks like it could be good and then come back some point later in the week and try it out, which has been fun. Only hard part is that it is really testing my food characters, trying to understand what I am ordering because some places give different foods different names.
- What do we do for P-day?
Recently, we have gone bowling twice with the other 新竹 (Xinzhu) Elders which has been fun, but other than that, it just depends on what the weather is like.

As for a few of the things from the week, we had exchanges with the Zone Leaders this week, which was pretty fun. I got to go to 竹南 (Zhunan) with Elder Dethloff, which most of the time was spent finding. It was truly interesting to see his style of finding, which is completely different than what I am use to doing. Which is contacting almost purely in English and then translating the words that they don't understand. But other than contacting, we had a bunch of service which was pretty fun, just because in 新竹 (Xinzhu) we still haven't been able to find a service that we can do each week, so it was nice to have some set up for us to do in 竹南 (Zhunan). We were helping a member move and then also spent time bagging rice for elderly people at a donation center, which was pretty fun. Also, for the really cool part, we attended PEC. The reason it was cool was because exactly 7 months ago I was on exchanges with the Elder Anderson, the zone leader at the time, and attended PEC. They were all surprised to see me again to say the least.

Now for one of the miracles. We have been trying to meet with a recent convert that went less active about a month after being baptized, and then randomly he called us up Tuesday morning and said he wanted to meet. We first had to call President Jergensen because he wanted to meet in 20 minutes, which was still our study time. President Jergensen said it would be ok, and we were off to meet with him. I was finally able to meet him which was cool and able to share a little message with him, which was super nice. He said that the rest of this month was pretty busy, but said that he would be willing to meet again the beginning of next moth, which was such a big miracle.

This week, just like many other weeks, we have been spending a lot of time finding, but this week was a little different in that it felt like everyone we were talking to was prepared. So, to say the least, our investigator pool really picked up this week. We are hoping that this next week it will be able to continue and that this next week we will be able to find even more of the people that the Lord has prepared. As for the spiritual part about all the new investigators, they were all found because of the "Because He Lives" initiative. We have been reminded to use the "Because He Lives" in our finding, and this week we put an even higher emphasis on using it. And as we did so, we were truly able to find the prepared through the "Because He Lives" video. Also one of the other cool things is that we have started meeting with one of our less active member's sisters. Things just worked out this last week that his sister was home and that we were able to share a little bit about the gospel with her and she said she would be willing to listen and learn, which is super cool.

As for my last comment from the week, it has to do with member missionary work. One of the coolest things while contacting was that we actually contacted a few people that had a friend that was a member. The reason it was so nice contacting them was that their friends were all super good examples of being a member of the church, which helped us share the gospel with them and invite them to meet with the missionaries. So no matter what we do as members of the church, others are always watching. As we set a example, others will notice it and then one day become the prepared.

Well, that was basically my week. We spent a lot of our time out finding were able to truly see some miracles from it! Hope you all can have a great week and thanks for all the emails and prayers!

Week 59 - Missed the Typhoon

你好!

Well, this really has been a fun week. We had Zone Meeting, Got to meet the Jergensen activity, and the side affects of a typhoon. So, to say the least, it was a pretty fun week.

So, to hop right into the typhoon, since I have been asked about it a few times by people, it wasn't actually as bad as they were predicting. 新竹 (Xinzhu) is known for having high speed winds year round since it is on the coast, so that typhoon didn't really make a huge difference for wind speeds here, but there was a bit of rain and it was cloudy for most of the week. But none of it was too severe here in 新竹 (Xinzhu). If it is pretty severe, the Assistants will call and say that you have to say inside til the storm gives up a little. We didn't get any calls or anything, so we were out as usual.

As for zone meeting, it was also pretty good. All of the training was on the fundamentals of missionary work, which was a nice review. As for the most interesting part of one of the trainings, they had us play hide and go seek. So the purpose was to show the importance of finding everyone, no matter where they are. 新竹 (Xinzhu) has a goal of being able to split into another stake, and to do so, they are putting an emphasis on finding those less actives and help them find their way back to the gospel. So, that was the biggest training that we had. Then after zone meeting, we got to help the 竹南 (Zhunan) sisters out with a baptismal interview. It was probably one of the longest interviews. Elder Huang was in doing the interview for about an hour and 20 minutes. I don't know how long they usually say they should take, but this one really felt like it was pretty long, but she is getting baptized on Sunday morning which is all that matters, she is taking that next step forward to coming closer to God.

Now for the biggest part of the week, we got to meet our new mission president and his family, which was super fun. The 新竹 (Xinzhu) and 竹南 (Zhunan) zones attended and had an opportunity to get to know their family and a little about President Jergensen's expectations on the mission.

Days and Jergensens
One of the things he also announced was that his wife would be making a mission website, so that family members at home can see more of what is happening in the mission, so here is the address: taiwantaipeimission.com . You can feel free to get on it and see what is on it. They have asked that us missionaries do not get on it, so I can't tell you what is on it, you will have to go check it out yourselves. As for a few things about President Jergensen, he is a Taiwan Taipei missionary as well, serving most of his time in Taipei. He brought three children with him, one of which will be going back to BYU in the fall. He is 195 cm tall, which was one of the first things that was asked by everyone, just because he really does look pretty tall. Also, he loves mangoes, which everyone seemed to agree with him on. That is kind of the basic information about it, we will be having interviews with him in the coming weeks, so we will have an opportunity to get to know him a little bit better in the coming weeks.

As for a cool miracle from the week, we were able to find an awesome new investigator. We have really been struggling recently on finding good new investigators that stick, so when he started accepting our invites, it just felt like a huge mercy from God.

For the bigger part of the week, we spent a majority of the time finding. Although we had the whole week set up, you learn to always make back up plans because people also seem to forget or just not end up coming. So this week, we had 12 lessons that fell through for the craziest reasons, which left us to having a lot of finding time.

Well, that was pretty much my week. Thanks for all the emails and prayers! Hope you all have a great week!

Week 58 - Summer time

你好!

Looking back on this week, I don't know why, but it felt like a pretty long week. I don't know if it was the heat, lots of finding, or the combination of both. But with that being said, it was still a pretty fun week.

As for this past week being the Fourth of July, sadly, the Taiwanese don't do much for our Independence Day, so to say the least, it was another day of just doing missionary work for us here in Taiwan.

From this past week, there were only really three things that stuck out.

The first one was with one of our investigators that we have been meeting with for the past little while. The interesting thing about this last week, was that when we met with her this last week, we had 5 members present at the lesson. We had only planned for four, but than one more person showed up unexpectedly. The four were the Young Women's first counselor, a young woman from the ward, and then our investigator's two friends that are members. So, to say the least, it was a pretty crowded apartment with all of us and the members, but it was super good. We actually felt like each of the members were able to play a pretty good role as we were teaching some of the commandments and also answer some of her questions as well. As for our investigator (陳怡如), she really is doing great, just have a few things we have to finish up before she is ready for her baptismal interview.

The second was going finding with our priest group. One of the best parts about summer time is that everyone is out of school. Which means that students are able to go out and do missionary work with us, which is super fun. Even though we were not able to do splits because the priest group consists of 1 priest, it was still pretty fun. He is a super smart kid that got baptized a few months ago and speaks fluent English and German and Chinese. Pry the best part of going out with Jason, was that it felt like we were in training again. We training him to pass out tracks at stop lights and all the fun stuff that you do when you go out finding, so, we feel like we gave him a pretty good idea of what missionary work is like here in Taiwan.

And for the third thing this week, it was finding. Having just mentioned that one best things about summer is that a lot of the members are more free to help us do missionary work, it is also a bit harder for finding because everyone has gone home and there aren't nearly as many people hanging around in 新竹 (Xinzhu) any more. Or they are all our buying 冰 (ice) because it is so hot. So, finding has gotten a bit harder to say the least as well, but we are still working on it. Looking at trying some more new ways of finding to see if it will help.

Well, it reality, that was pretty much my week. Hope you all have a great week next week! Thanks for all the prayers and emails!

P.S. As for something interesting, I have heard that our new mission president should make me look like a little kid. The Elders that had an opportunity to meet President Jergensen last week said that he is either as tall as me or taller. Also, thought this was an interesting fact about him, he can wrap his hand around a softball, weird little fact that I have heard, but I am sure I will find out more about him in the coming week or two.

Week 57 - President Day's Farwell

你好!

Well, this week really went by pretty fast, to say the least. As for the main part of the week, it was transfer meeting. With everyone in the mission being able to attend, it was pretty exciting, not to mention we got to pick up our packages from the office, which was super nice.

Just as a little bit of an update on all my old areas, 苗栗 (Miaoli) and 新埔 (Xinpu), they have changed big time. With 13 areas being closed, 苗栗 (Miaoli) and 新埔 (Xinpu) are both back down to one companionship, which is a bit of a bummer because both of those areas both needed those missionaries, but with the next transfer in August and 25+ missionaries arriving, I would guess that they are going to be opened back up. Also, Elder Brinton is now breaking, which is super cool. He was broken for a transfer and is now breaking.

As for the week, we started the week off with a ton of rain, and then ended the week with a ton of sun, which meant a lot of sweating. The nice part about this week was that we were being more forward on setting up all of our lessons, so we spent a majority of the week in lessons, and not out in the rain to heat. With that being said, we still had a good amount of finding each day, but not as much as we usually would in a week.

This week, we were also able to meet with a referral from the Dragon Boat Festival, which was pretty cool. The super cool part about it though was that he had done his homework before meeting with us. Some of the first questions he was asking was about tithing and the word of wisdom. Along with that, he was also asking what makes the mormon church different than other churches. So, right now, he is looking like he is going to be a pretty good investigator because he already has that interest in understand what the LDS church is all about. Even though we weren't able to answer all of his questions this last week, we are hoping to be able to meet with him this next week and help him better understand the Church and the importance it can have in his life.

For the highlight of the week, it was transfer meeting. If any of you are wondering, I did not move and I am still with Elder Huang, but we got to attend to hear President and Sister Day's farewell talks. As for the funniest part about it all, need to explain one thing about the office. One of the office elders is super into Disney, so he is always telling President Day how awesome Disney is and different Disney quotes. Now that you have the general background, this should be a little funnier. First Sister Day spoke, sharing how she has loved serving here in Taiwan and how she feels that we are all her children/babies. She remembers picking each of us up from the airport and watching up learn and grow as we have been serving here. Then as President Day was beginning his talk, his first words were, "There is a phrase that keeps coming to my mind when I think about all my missionaries. All my babies are growing up and saving China!" I sure hope you recognize where that is from, but if you don't, I would suggest that you watch the mulon movie once more. He continued to explain that it really is true. We may not be literally saving them from the Mongolians, but we are saving them spiritually. We have been call to serve those people of Taiwan and help them find the truth, so we really are all "saving China." He then continued on sharing about some of the accomplishments in the mission and also a few more things about what our purpose as missionaries are, but it really was interesting to hear how the mission really has changed and grown. It really has changed since President has arrived. So, to say the least President and Sister Day will surely be remembered and missed, but we are all sure President Jergensen will do a great job too.

As for a little bit about our area right now, felt like I should share about what is coming up. Right now we are working with a good number of investigators, three of which have super solid baptismal dates all at the beginning of August, which should be a super cool month for them. We have been working with the three of them for about a month to a month and a half, and they have all been progressing super well. As for the coolest part about them though is actually seeing them willing to make the changes necessary for preparing for baptism. So, I really consider it a blessing to be able to see the change, as it really is just a good testimony builder for myself as well, just seeing people willing to flip their life around to follow the Savior.

Well, that was basically the week here in 香山 (Xiangshan), thanks for all the emails and prayers! And hope you all have a great week!
